Welcome to our campaign to make Suffolk the First China Friendly County. This is a joint initiative by Choose Suffolk and Yaxley China. It seeks to rise to the challenge and grasp the huge potential that modern day China offers. Our aim is to promote and market Suffolk to China by extending a warm welcoming hand and being fully open for contact in three areas: tourism, education and business.

We wish to combine the skills and strengths of both the private and public sectors within our country and to involve as many parties as possible in a coordinated, focused approach. Please enjoy learning more from this website and becoming involved in this exciting, groundbreaking project.

China is a vast nation of 1.33 billion people. Many in the West have yet to grasp proactively the immense, rapid, unprecedented change and development the country has been undergoing. Since 1978 its economy has expanded over 70 times in size. It has already overtaken Germany and Japan in GDP, and by 2030 it is expected to surpass the USA to become the world’s largest economy. Along side the rapid economic developments, profound demographic and social change are taking place.

Here are some of the remarkable figures:

• Whilst most economies struggle to return to growth, China's economy expanded at 8% through the recent recession and will grow 11.7% this year

• China’s urban middle class (currently 100 million) will number a staggering 730 million by 2020. This change, in just 10 years' time, will fuel massive demand for goods and services within the country and abroad

• Outbound tourism numbers from the country are expected to rise from 4 million (1995) to exceed 100 million by 2020. There is a hunger to travel abroad and Europe tops the wish list of "dream locations"

• China is already Britain’s largest export market outside the US and the EU. British companies sold over £5.2 billion’s worth of goods and services there in 2007

• Chinese students in the UK already contribute an estimated £1.5 billion to our economy each year. Within the UK, more British students took Mandarin at A level last year than took German

The importance of China in the world today simply cannot be underestimated. Within China, there is enormous enthusiasm for the English language, culture and education – but outside London, most are still largely unfamiliar with Britain. We have a real opportunity to get “ahead of the game” and to put Suffolk on the map within China, as a place to do business, invest in, study in, and to visit. Our goal is long term. It is to co-operate across sectors on a very local level, person to person, to derive economic and social benefit in the process for the people of Suffolk, and to develop lasting friendship and understanding between the two nations over the course of the next two decades.
