We believe friendship between peoples creates prosperity and harmony in our world
我们相信,人民之间的友谊创造了世界的繁荣与和谐

• The Chinese like to say "1810: London. 1910: New York. 2010: Beijing". The sheer dynamism, energy and creativity present in the country today is certainly extraordinary

• Since 1978, China’s economy has developed at a pace unprecedented in world history. A backward agrarian society has expanded over 70 times in size, at an average rate of 10% every single year, to become the World’s no 2

• Guandong province alone has a larger GDP than wealthy Sweden. Cities such as Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin boast modern stunning skylines, world-class luxury hotels and shopping, dozens of universities and populations larger than many EU countries

• With the new found wealth has come big social change. Absolute poverty has declined from 53% to 8% in 20 years. Hundreds of millions have literally been lifted from starvation level, though big disparities of wealth continue. The urban middle class will number 730 million by 2020

The extraordinary potential for businesses around the world is clear in the above context, despite major challenges in entering the market. Competitors such as Germany have not been slow to realise this. It’s is VW’s second largest market worldwide, Porsche’s no 1 market, and Mercedes-Benz experienced 77% sales growth in China in 2009. Luxury French goods manufacturer already has 29 stores there in 24 cities and saw double-digit growth there last year.

Britain is also however, perhaps surprisingly, also already well placed to capitalise on all this. China is Britain’s largest export market outside the US and EU. In 2007, we exported £3.781 billion of goods, and £1.536 billion of services to the country.

Britain is also currently the number one EU investor in China. There are nearly 6000 British invested projects in the country worth US $15 billion at March 2008, excluding the important UK banking, insurance and securities sectors. The UK attracts more Chinese inward investment than any other EU country: 11% of total Chinese investment in Europe comes to us. Green technologies, shipping and biotech are obvious major Chinese growth areas that have a natural fit with Suffolk. China’s installed wind power capacity, to give a single example, doubled from 2008 to 2009 and now exceeds Germany’s.

Former Business Secretary Lord Mandelson summarised the situation in 2009 by saying that China offers British business more opportunities than anywhere else in the world.

Suffolk County Council has agreed to an important step for our local economy by the creation of a Chinese language website to promote Suffolk as a place to do business, to encourage inward investment, and to promote links between Suffolk businesses active in China with enterprises there. We are very keen to help any Suffolk business interested in entering the Chinese market with practical help and guidance, and to hear about your company’s existing operations in the country.
